Salsa Salsa Dance Studio was founded in 2004, by Marcus Gonzalez and Ray Colon (see Instructors page), in a bright newly-renovated storefront space in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Our students come just around the corner, as well as from all over Brooklyn, Manhattan and even New Jersey, to take part in the classes and socials that we offer.
Our mission is to nurture and lead our students in an enjoyable experience learning to dance salsa. Salsa On 2, also known as "mambo on 2", "New York club style" or "breaking on 2", is one of many forms of Latin dance. Salsa music, or mambo, and salsa dancing are of Afro-Cuban descent. The dance as we know it today developed in New York in the 1950's, and remains extremely popular here, and in many other parts or the world. What differentiates On 2 from other styles of salsa is that the dancers break forward -- or change body direction -- on the 2nd and 6th beats in a measure of music.
Our studio offers detailed instruction in this specific form of Latin dance. We will teach you from the basics of the dance: you decide how good you want to be! You can learn all of the fancy turn patterns, footwork, dips and body movements, just like what you may have seen at some of the Latin clubs around the city. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced dancer, you will learn something new.
We are happy to announce the opening of our second location, in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Where we will be offering classes for adults and children, starting in February 2007. See the Schedule page for detailed information. Both studios are available to rent for private events.
We look forward to seeing you soon, and remember, whatever your reason for dancing salsa, the most important reason is to have fun!
